Hospitality History
The Holzmann's moved in in 2005. Almost immediately, friends stayed the night in a guest room or stopped by for a meal. Family visiting from out of state found comfortable accommodations. Two toddlers stayed for more than half a year in a pseudo-foster situation. A chaperone for orphans on tour was able to be hosted here.
Other events started up:
- Movie Night ran for more than a decade, with high school and college-aged kids spending their Saturday evenings enjoying takeout, a movie, and a chance to hang out. Eventually, the cutoff had to be moved to midnight. Today, many of those kids are married with children of their own.LEGO Movie night
- Thanksgiving was an annual event, swelling with a growing extended family and often an additional family from another country experiencing their first American turkey day.Food
- D-Groups met here, giving space for high schoolers to study the Bible and talk about their spiritual lives. Mormon missionaries and Jehovah's Witnesses also spent time discussing their beliefs within these walls.Camp Speaker
- S.I.G.N.A.L. was a brief experiment with media production, introducing students to green screens, film equipment, editing, production, and more. The HolzHouse has also been the location and basecamp for several short films.Green Screen Setup
- Laurel Tree Workshop found a home here, with plenty of crafting space to create award winning cosplay costumes and props. This talented group also created practical effects for a fantastical short film.Angela NDK
- Taco Tuesday, a weekly neighborhood potluck, had its genesis at the HolzHouse. Several families with young children get a chance to chat with other adults while the children play or watch Bluey.Taco Tuesday Tots
- This is also the place where a couple working moms find a space to hang out, get work done, and allow their children to run wild.Just a Few Kids
- And every other holiday or excuse is utilized to bring people together.4th of July
Eventually, children were born here. One of them literally. She even beat the midwives by half an hour!
Meet the Holzmanns

Luke and Brittany were college sweethearts at Biola University. Uncertain about life after college, they prayed for "the right house, in the right place, at the right time". After graduating, Luke returned home and spent a day with a relator looking at houses. None were right -- all outside his price range, not what he wanted, or completely impractical. He returned home discouraged. "I don't know how to find a house!" he complained.
His mother reminded him that his little brother's best-friend's parents, who were moving to Florida, had promised to keep their house off the market until he had a chance to see it. "Why don't you go take a look at it tomorrow?" she suggested.
The house was perfect. Slightly vaulted ceilings, but not the ridiculous two-story entry way (so much heat loss!). A south-facing kitchen (which his mother said was just what you wanted). There were even sheds (one would become a chicken coop), and a hot tub (which never really worked right and eventually had to go but was fun to use a few times). The fact that the house is at the very top of the hill and faces West means that flooding and ice accumulation are not a problem (which was a fantastic blessing to discover after years in the house). And an unfinished basement which could be a studio (or a Movie Night hangout space) with a dedicated entry and stairs (making it possible for a future where video production clients could come in without going through the house) were more things to celebrate.

The first full-time additional resident of the HolzHouse was Luke's business partner. The film production company never took off, so the basement never fully became a studio, but it still got plenty of use.
Several Movie Night kids stayed over regularly. One became a renter after high school.
Then Luke's best friend from college moved in, seeking a new life after living in the woods at a camp in Oregon. After getting married, he and his wife (Brittany's sister!), eventually moved out for their own space.
Luke's cousin from Germany stayed at the HolzHouse for a year, getting the American high school experience and learning to drive.
A friend made through the con community and film productions also rented a room for a time.
After years in the adoption process and several miscarriages, Brittany and Luke finally had a child. Then another. And another.

With a growing family, inflation, and significant cost-of-living increases, it was time for a change. After 20 years, the family downsized and remodeled the basement to create space for renters.
